Two tracks, one program

Days, or evenings and Saturday

You learn the same things either way. What changes is when you are on the floor.

Full-time days

Monday to Friday on the floor, with the clinic on Wednesday and Friday. A good fit if you can set work aside for the program.

  • Monday to Thursday: theory and practice floor

  • Wednesday and Friday: the student clinic

  • Finishes sooner than the evening track

Part-time evenings and Saturday

Three evenings and a Saturday clinic day, for students who keep a job or care for family during the week.

  • Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings

  • Saturday: the student clinic

  • Takes longer to complete

Theory and floor

Theory in the room, skill on the floor

Each week starts with a short lesson and ends with hands on hair. You see a skill done slowly, do it on a mannequin head, then do it again until it is steady.

Your instructor checks your work at your chair, not from the front of the room. When you are steady, you move from mannequins to clinic clients with an instructor beside you.

How a week goes

  • Short lessons, then practice

  • Mannequin heads in every texture

  • Clinic clients when your instructor says you are ready

What you practice

Six skills, repeated until they are steady

  • Clipper work

Guards, clipper-over-comb and a clean back of the neck.

  • Tapers and fades

Blending from skin to length, on straight hair and on coils.

  • Scissor work

Scissor-over-comb, texture and the shapes that grow out well.

  • Beards and the razor

Shaping, line-ups and a hot-towel shave with a new blade each time.

  • Every hair texture

Waves, coils, curls, twists and straight hair, on mannequins and on clinic clients.

  • The shop

Cleaning and disinfecting tools between clients, the rules of the state board and how a chair is run.

The state exam

Ready for the exam, a little more each week

Your program runs for the hours the Ohio State Barber Board requires, and your enrollment letter lists them. A license is the state's to give; we prepare you for what the exam asks.

  • 01

    Practice in the exam's order

Near the end of the program you work through the practical tasks in the order the exam asks for them.

  • 02

Written questions, a little each week

A few written questions close every theory lesson, so the material is familiar before the exam.

  • 03

A mock practical with your instructor

Your instructor watches a full run-through and tells you what to tighten up.

About the program

Which track should I choose?

Choose the one your week can hold. Days finish sooner; evenings and Saturday take longer but let you keep a job.

Do you teach every hair texture?

Yes. We cut waves, coils, curls, twists and straight hair, on mannequin heads and on clinic clients.

What do I need to buy?

A kit of clippers, trimmers, shears, combs and a cape. We give you the list at your enrollment meeting; the brands are your choice.

How big is a group?

A small one. Fewer students means more time with an instructor at your chair.
